Wilkinson Eyre and Gifford and Partners' £20 million Millennium Bridge linking Gateshead and Newcastle is on schedule (floodwaters permitting) to be floated down the Tyne and lifted into place next Monday. The 850 tonne 'eye-opening' footbridge will be carried on a barge the size of a football pitch and will be lifted into place using a 120m tall Asian Hercules floating crane. The bridge will be opened next summer and will rise to allow boats up and down the river.
