Word reaches Astragal of yet another architect supplying his ideas for nothing - this time to the surprise and delight of his potential client. Local lad Terry Farrell was in Newcastle last Friday for the launch of the riba's Brownfields First initiative in the north-east. The night before he started thinking about one of the city's most difficult areas, the isolated patch between the river and the railway station, and arrived armed with a sketch solution, which he showed to the assembled planners and local dignitaries. Farrell's solution? Build a 6-8m-wide pedestrian tunnel under the railway tracks to link the area back to the city.
