Former riba Honorary Secretary Maurice McCarthy was spotted alighting from the first-class section of Eurostar at Waterloo. Looking slightly sinister in a long black Crombie, he was cornered by a dog and its burly uniformed handler from Customs and Excise. Astonished passengers watched as McCarthy calmly removed a white scarf from a package and held it out, whereupon the slobbering dog sank in its fangs with an audible chomp. He then gave the package to another officer with whom he shook hands, then walked off to the taxi rank. A bemused onlooker was told that the dog was being trained to sniff out drugs and the event was a simulation. How unlike Portland Place . . .
