Trashy, but cool

Sofie Mollekens, of Trashilicious in Belgium is partnering with her London-based compatriot Walter Raes at his exhibition, ‘Dun Roamin’

Mollekens creates fashion accessories such as handbags and jewellery out of recycled materials. She was inspired by a handbag she saw in a local market in Ghana which was made of recycled materials and since then has worked to create new accessories from discarded materials such as car tires, corks and plastic wrapping.

Mollekens’ products will complement Raes’s installation, a room in which each piece has been adapted from found objects and waste, re-assembled to create familiar objects and furniture.

A second artist, the sculptor Debra Franses Bean will also exhibit at with Walter Raes. Her focus is on the handbag and the sentimental objects they carry. She presents a collection of objects, preserved in clear resin handbags and presented on plinths, as a way of creating a voyeuristic insight into the female world. Two bags set with found objects will reflect the work of Walter Raes and Sofie Mollekens.
