Totally detached

Irish-born architect Mark Guard has bucked a trend in his statement for a book on successful Irish people in Britain, launched by Irish prime minister Bertie Ahern. We have heard architects claiming to be 'passionate' about architecture on innumerable occasions. But Guard, when asked for his passions, responded 'Can't think of any, ' and lists as his strengths 'emotionally detached from work'. Guard describes his cool interiors as 'modernist, not minimalist', but in one project is show ing an intr igu ing echo of history. His house for Pat McCarthy in Kilkenny will have an outside bathroom.
