Tonkin Liu scoops planning for cliff-top house

[First look + plans] London-based architects Tonkin Liu has received planning permission for a cliff-top house in St Margret’s Bay near Dover

Dover District Council approved plans for the dwelling adjacent to a Site of Special Scientific Interest managed by the Natural Trust.

The landscape around the building will be developed as a sequence of organic rooms that meld the house into the site, according to the practice.

The house is designed to meet the requirements of the Code for Sustainable Homes Level 4.

Ecological and environmental concerns have been ‘critical’ to the design of the building, according to the practice. The scheme is on an exposed cliff-top location.

The design incorporates super-insulated walls and roof, a green roof habitat, high performance glazing, natural ventilation, a heat recovery system and renewable energy.

The client spent his childhood in the local area and his parents lived in the existing building on the site.
