A home in the garden, in the garden city. This extension to a house in Welwyn Garden City knits together two workers' cottages, opening up the ground floor to the garden. A timber box floats down the lawn, capturing external space in its wings and forming a picture frame. Inside and outside spaces are blurred, creating a series of transitional spaces from the darker interior out to the daylight. The engineer client's workroom has its own timber frame and acts as the ship's bridge, the point from which all the building controls are activated. Storage and services run in the thick wall carved out of the deeper spaces. Alwyn Craig was the structural engineer, the contractor was Steve Godfrey. The value of the project was £34,000.
