Time to put World Squares into action

I have been surprised at your low-key coverage (so far) of Westminster Council's decision not to back Sir Norman Foster's World Square project. Westminster's hopeless leave-it-up-to-the-government attitude is no way to greet the new millennium. I was interested to see a letter in The Times this week from the directors both of the National Gallery and the National Portrait Gallery, urging that pedestrianisation of the north side of Trafalgar Square be tried, at least for an experimental period. This is surely the way forward; once the public gets the chance to walk in a transformed space, then the virtues of the World Squares programme will surely become clear to all.
