A curious cross-cultural clash was revealed by James Soane of Conran & Partners, speaking to an AJ audience at the highly successful 100% Design show last week. A project to design European-style houses in Tokyo had run into trouble over kitchens. 'For some reason the Japanese buy European kitchen units but American appliances - so we had to butcher all the units to make them fit.' Very third way.
