Thumbs up for Sheppard Robson academy in Bolton

The Sheppard Robson-designed Essa Academy, an 8,000m² new school for 900 pupils in the North West, has been given planning permission by Bolton Council

A spokesman for architect said the school would feature a biomass boiler and a ‘zero-carbon classroom’ and will be built almost entirely from sustainable and recycled materials.

Rupert Goddard, associate at Sheppard Robson and design director for the building, said: ‘It is very rewarding to get to this stage of the project. Now our designs and ideas for this cutting-edge school can start to take shape and become a reality.

‘Essa’s educational vision has been translated into an uplifting, agile, practical and elegant design that will not only have a positive impact on students and staff, but will help to raise aspirations of the entire community.’

Construction of the independent school will begin in April 2010, with completion scheduled for September 2011.
