Three UK firms in Tiananmen Square global competition

Terry Farrell, Percy Thomas Partnership and Dixon Jones with bdp have been asked to compete to design a £60 million national grand theatre in the historic Tiananmen Square, Beijing.

ptp will team up with Studio Valle of Rome. Others on the 21-strong ‘foreign’ longlist include Hans Hollein, Gregotti Associati International, Arata Isozaki, Jean Nouvel, the Takenaka Corporation, Moshe Safdie from the us, Architecture Studio from France and Hong Kong’s Rocco Design.

The architect for ‘one of the best arts palaces in the world’, and ‘a monumental work to carry Chinese culture forward, to reflect the spirit of the times and to contribute to the development of the performing arts’, will be chosen after a 12-week competition. An all-Chinese competition was held last year, but the Chinese authorities decided to open it up to worldwide participation in accordance with its ‘open policy.’

Ove Arup & Partners and aace of New York are acoustic consultants. Three ‘winners’ will be chosen, from which the client will make its final choice.

ptp has also made it on to a shortlist of 10 to design a new national laboratory in Bonn.
