The test of time and the British Library

Thank you for the kind comments (aj 1/8.1.98) on my knighthood. I would, however, like to correct your statement that I 'inherited the British Library job' from Leslie Martin. In 1962, following a number of competitive interviews, Leslie Martin and I were appointed jointly to design what was then the British Museum Library. The chairman of the selection board, fixing a steely eye upon me as if to assess my potential for longevity, stated, 'This job may take rather a long time.' Can I suggest that (with all due respect to you gentlemen of the press) that remark is about the only statement that has stood the test of truth during the ensuing 36 (not 25) years?
