The Green Paper on planning will put forward recommendations for reform to the current planning system, which was established in 1947.

The government has said the Green Paper will suggest improvements to the handling of major infrastructure projects in three ways. As well as consulting on plans for parliament to approve major projects, it will be introducing clear statements of national policy on infrastructure - with the first one likely to be airports - and speeding up inquiry procedures. The Green Paper should be published before Christmas, possibly as soon as 4 December, and will be followed by a threemonth consultation period.
