The Buildings of Europe

Copenhagen by Christopher Woodward (mup, 1998. £14.99) deals with a city which the fashionable Ellipsis guides have yet to reach. But visitors should remember that in 1996 the Danish publisher Arkitektens Forlag issued its English-language Copenhagen Architecture Guide (£25 approx).

Though bulkier and more expensive than Woodward's book, it includes 100 extra buildings, has colour not drab black-and-white photographs, and often supplies plans. Available: Triangle Bookshop 0171 631 1381.

things 8 - the summer 1998 edition of this unpredictable design journal - has the catholic interests of its predecessors, and similarly combines a few relatively substantial essays with some two dozen brief contributions. Among the inclusions are a piece on the American reception of Scandinavian design in the 1950s, and one on 'Tuberculosis Shelters in Britain, 1900-1930' - garden-houses for patients who had to be isolated from their families. things costs £6 plus £1 p&p from po Box 10632, London SW3 4ZF.
