The Big Hawaii

Friends, family and colleagues of my editor swooped on the St John Restaurant last week for a surprise 50th birthday party. Among the distinguished scribblers, tv stars and architects were Will Alsop, Terry Farrell, and Piers Gough, plus aj correspondents including Paul Hyett and Brian Waters. Cedric Price read out telegrams from absent friends, and aj cartoonist Louis Hellman decorated the cake with a portrait which a waitress kindly described as making the editor look 'too fat'. The birthday boy's speech prompted much speculation as to the origin of his humour. 'It's true that he's been telling jokes for years,' confirmed his father, occasional aj reviewer William Finch. 'He usually gets them from me first.'
