TFP Farrells completes Kingkey Tower in Shenzhen

[First look] TFP Farrells has completed this 441.8m-tall skyscraper in Shenzhen, China – the tallest building ever designed by a British architect

Known as the Kingkey Finance Tower or KK100, the building features 100 storeys and is the eight highest skyscraper in the world while also being the tallest tower ever designed by a British architect.

Farrells scooped the job to design the tower following an international design competition in 2004.

Terry Farrell said: ‘We are very proud to have designed the tallest tower ever by a British architect. This is a key landmark for Farrells and a befitting way to celebrate the 20th anniversary of setting up our office in Hong Kong.’

The 210,000m² building is part of a 417,000m² mixed-use development masterplan – also designed by Farrells – for the area.

The masterplan features five residential buildings and two commercial buildings while the main tower will be linked to a retail podium directly connecting to a new metro station

Within Kingkey Tower, levels 4 to 72 will house 173,000m² of ‘Grade-A’ office space while levels 75 to 100 will contain a ‘6-star’ luxury hotel.

According to a statement the building’s is an ‘allusion to a fountain representing the wealth and prosperity springing from the economic success that is Shenzhen.’

Close to Hong Kong, Shenzhen has a population of over 8 million Shenzhen and is China’s biggest port.
