Tate chief Serota joins London design panel left by Rogers

Architectural champion and Tate director Nicholas Serota has been appointed to Mayor of London Boris Johnson’s Design Advisory Panel

The news comes two months after Labour Peer and Stirling Prize Winner Richard Rogers (pictured right) announced he was walking away from his roles as deputy chair of both the design advisory panel and Great Spaces panel.

Serota joins current panel members Sunand Prasad, the former RIBA president, English Heritage representative Joyce Bridges and Argent Group boss Roger Madelin.

It is understood Serota will be joined by another two new members next week.

London Development Agency design director Peter Bishop said: ‘[Serota] has been a tremendous champion of architecture and design, and brings his wealth of experience to the role.’

The Mayor added: ‘When I set up my panel just a year ago I said it was vital that we have a constant supply of new ideas and fresh thinking.

‘[Serota’s] extensive knowledge of London and what makes it so extraordinarily successful will be vital in ensuring we make the right decisions now that continually improve the quality of life in our great city for generations to come.’

Meanwhile, Daniel Moylan, chairman of the mayor’s Public Realm Delivery Group responsible for improving London’s public spaces, will chair the panel from December, taking over from Simon Milton.
