Lord Foster of Thames Bank was on good form at the rias conference in Edinburgh last week, giving the audience a breathtaking slide show tour of his impressive portfolio (but glaringly minus any of his less celebrated works in Scotland - like the Armadillo in Glasgow or Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen). Two new projects especially caught the eye however - one being a curving roofed university building in Malaysia, but, the other, more intriguingly being a bulbous timber apartment building Foster and Partners has designed 'in the Alps'. 'This will take timber technology to a new level' he told the audience. Who could it be for? Foster himself? It's certainly a long time since the practice did a private apartment for anybody... We won't be seeing it, however. Foster, spying an RIAS-commissioned photographer snapping event speakers, made quite sure of that. He took the photographer aside after he'd been photographed accepting his shiny new fellowship and had a little word to make sure that any shot of him with the apartment image in the background would go no further...
