Swedes White Arkitekter scoop Southend Pier contest

[FIRST LOOK] White Arkitekter has beaten 74 other entrants to land the contest to redevelop Southend Pier in the mouth of the Thames

Swedish sustainable experts White Arkitekter teamed up with Price & Myers in the competition to overhaul Southend Pier, the longest pier in the world. They aim to turn the ‘pleasure pier into an urban pier’.

The practice claims the winning design will transform the pier into a ‘street’ with restaurants, cafés and other destinations every 500 metres,’an extension of the High Street onto the sea’. At the end of the pier will be an outdoor theatre with a capacity of 500 people.

All of the new buildings on the pier will be self sufficient using technologies such as wind turbines and a sea water heat pump to reduce energy costs, as well as incorporating natural ventilation and daylighting to minimise energy use.

The materials used have to be low maintenance and long lasting due to their position, so the design incorporates untreated timber, corten steel and glass.
