cabe and the Council for the Protection of Rural England have welcomed this week's announcement of a new government strategy for sustainable construction. The strategy aims to guide the industry on cutting down on the energy used in building construction as well as what buildings use from day to day, including water supplies and the impact of construction projects on local biodiversity. While the document stops short of setting out hard targets, ministers have not ruled out legislation to ensure that the industry falls into line. Architect Rab Bennetts called for designers to be at 'the heart of the action' on sustainability and said that up to 50 per cent could be slashed from the lifetime energy use of a building through better design.
