Summer madness

Best architectural silly season story so far was the so-called 'Fifty best buildings' feature in the Independent magazine. This triumphant exercise, masterminded by architecture correspondent Jay Merrick, managed to exclude anything by Hawksmoor, Butterfield, Stirling, Waterhouse or Barry, among others. No Palace of Westminster, Westminster Cathedral, Liverpool Cathedral, Manchester Town Hall, St George's Hall, etc, etc. On the other hand, that important icon the Ikea store in Warrington found a proud place in the list.

Plenty of recent trendy architecture made the 50 but, amazingly enough, the relevant architects were scarcely mentioned - except where it was Foster. This travesty will be treasured for years to come.
