So Adolf Hitler was a closet gay who had a crush on his top architect, according to German historian Joachim Fest in his newly published biography of Albert Speer. Fest says Speer was the dominant personality in their homoerotic relationship (they spent hours together poring over building plans for the Third Reich), but did not return Hitler's affections. Speer did, however, have a mordant sense of humour. In a tv documentary before his death in London in 1981, he revisited the Berlin Olympic stadium where he regretted the poor state of the crumbling concrete. 'It's lucky the Fuhrer isn't around now. This was supposed to last a thousand years.'
