Property developer Stuart Lipton and entrepreneur Julian Metcalfe have been chosen to oversee the regeneration of Tottenham and Croydon respectively following the riots
The businessmen will head up the two taskforces established by London mayor Boris Johnson to look at areas worst hit by violent unrest in the capital.
Lipton’s taskforce will focus on Tottenham in north London where the three-day period of disturbance erupted following the death of 29-year-old Mark Duggan.
Aimed at delivering ‘major and long-lasting’ transformation of the two riot-hit inner city areas, the groups will work with borough councils, local business people and the community to create new regeneration masterplans.
Their remit covers transport infrastructure, buying up and rebuilding affected properties and funding business rate relief, as well as supporting employment
Stuart Lipton’s Chelsfield Partners is currently working on the David Chipperfield-designed redevelopment of Elizabeth House next to Waterloo station and OMA and John Pawson’s revamp of the Commonwealth Institute for the Design Museum. Julian Metcalfe set up Pret A Manger and sushi chain Itsu.
London mayor Boris Johnson said: ‘This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to build on the momentum of rebuilding and repair work and turn it into a permanent regeneration of two long-neglected areas of the capital.
‘Following the appalling destruction we witnessed in August, these taskforces will harness the expertise of business leaders Haringey and Croydon Councils and local people themselves to set the course of the future for their areas.
‘Both Sir Stuart and Julian Metcalfe bring with them a wealth of commercial experience to help champion investment to improve the lives of Londoners in Tottenham and Croydon and I am delighted they have taken on these vital roles.’
The taskforces are expected to report on their findings to the mayor before the end of the year.
Their proposals would be planned and managed by local authorities, with borough council project teams leading on project management.
