Structural honours for designs around the world

Some of the world’s top buildings and their design teams will win praise this week in the Institution of Structural Engineers Special Awards 1997, held on 27 February.

A Lobb Partnership design for Bolton’s Reebok Stadium has helped win a special award for engineers Deakin Callard & Partners and Watson Steel.

Mott MacDonald is singled out for the Tsing Ma Bridge in Hong Kong to a design by Yee Architects. Kume Sekkei and Kajima Design, two multidisciplinary firms, win a special award for Japan’s Nagano Olympic Memorial Arena. The design joint venture for this project included Kume, Kajima, Okumura, Nissan, Lijima and Takagi.

Commended teams include BDP for No1 Tennis Stadium & Broadcast Centre, and Jan Bobrowski & Partners for South Quay Footbridge to a design by Chris Wilkinson Architects. Kirk McClure Morton was commended for Belfast Waterfront Hall designed by Robinson & McIlwaine. A design by Newcastle-based architect FaulknerBrowns for the Aquadrome in Inverness also helped Cundall Johnston & Partners to a commendation.
