Artist Patrick Murphy has used an empty office building in Barnsley as a canvas for a large-scale public artwork
The Strata project at Central Offices in Barnsley town centre ‘explores the formal progressions of Chromatic colours and repetitive structures… Strata provides an exploration and celebration of a fundamental human experience of colour.’ The building is lit from within at night to create a subtle lighting effect, assuming the appearance of a huge stained glass window.
Patrick Murphy said: ‘The support of other artists and volunteers was vital to the success of this artwork and it is a testament to the passion of local creatives that they were so keen to support this project.’
The building’s windows were painted by a team of volunteer artists and are back-lit. Strata was used as a backdrop to the launch of Barnsley’s UK City of Culture 2013 Bid – Barnsley Main ‘Coal to Culture’.
