Store house

Paul Hamlyn's recent substantial donation to the Labour Party came about partly as a result of his property coup involving the old Daily Mirror headquarters in London's Holborn Circus, redeveloped to designs by Lord Foster (also architect for Lord Hamlyn's greenhouse in his '30s Modernist house in Chelsea).

The building is to be occupied by J Sainsbury as a headquarters - but not for that long. The grocer has commissioned Stanhope and Foster to remodel its old building in Stamford Street, south of the Thames at Blackfriars, to make a sparkling new headquarters, complete with public open space and a Sainsbury's Central store.

Locals have been enjoying a consultation exercise near the site - next to the Mad Hatter pub. The only thing in Wonderland at the moment is Sainsbury shares. . .
