The government has issued a management plan for Stonehenge and its landscape ahead of a decision at the beginning of next month on a design and build contractor and operator for a new visitor centre.

The plan, mandatory for all of UNESCO's world heritage sites, focuses on the ways of integrating sustainable visitor access with farming, archaeology and locals, who can suffer from traffic congestion. The visitor centre competition is being overseen by English Heritage with Richard MacCormac as architectural advisor. The competition has been narrowed down to two unnamed consortia.
