London-based architects Bennetts Associates have made it on the 2011 Stirling Prize shortlist for the fourth time in the company’s history.
The RIBA award winning project Royal Shakespeare and Swan Theatres in Stratford-upon-Avon follows: Brighton’s Jubilee Library in 2005; Leicester University’s Richard Attenborough Centre in 1998; and an office development Reading in 1990, the firms’ first major project.
Founded in 1987 by Rab and Denise Bennetts, Bennetts Associates initially focussed on office buildings, before broadening out to theatres, universities, factories, transport, hotels and housing - with a particular focus on sustainability. The practice was a founding member of the UK Green Building Council.
The Royal Shakespeare and Swan Theatres were described by the RIBA jury as being: ‘Thoughtful and creative with an exciting atmosphere whilst historic in its references and contemporary in its design’.
The Stirling Prize winner will be announced at the Magna Centre in Rotherham on Saturday 1 October
