Starfall Farm, Bath by Mitchell Taylor Workshop

  • Comment

[SMALL PROJECTS 2011] Alterations and additions to Starfall Farm were constrained by Green Belt policy, a very difficult planning committee and an existing rear extension that the client wanted to retain

MTW sought to mask the existing extension but also wrapp seamlessly around a new extension. Openings in the building were carefully placed to allow for good building performance. For example, sliding glass screens in the kitchen allow for views of outside and rooflights on the east side allow morning light into the heart of the building as early as possible. The thermal mass is ruthlessly exposed internally: concrete floors, bare plastered concrete block walls and a concrete kitchen.

The external cladding was designed to conceal the proportions of the existing openings and to allow privacy where necessary while seamlessly wrapping around the extension to integrate the new with the existing.

Nearly all finishes are self finished: larch with no capping, reused clay tiles from existing buildings on the site, exposed concrete, shuttering ply joinery and bare plaster.
