Stanton Williams and Witherford Watson Mann vie for Royal Opera House revamp

  • Comment

Stirling Prize-winner Stanton Williams is up against Witherford Watson Mann in the contest to overhaul the world famous Royal Opera House in London

The practices were chosen from an initial seven-strong shortlist which included Amanda Levete, Caruso St John, Diller Scofidio and Renfro, Heatherwick Studio and Jamie Fobert.

The two studios were picked as finalists for the job to improve the Grade I-listed building’s entrances and public areas following an interview by a jury which included Jeremy Dixon last month.

The programme will also overhaul the Royal Opera House’s Linbury Studio Theatre and Paul Hamlyn Hall.

Tony Hall, Royal Opera House chief executive said: ‘We were extremely pleased by the richness and variety of the submissions received.

‘All the architects taking part in the competition proposed inspirational ideas for how our public spaces could evolve. We now look forward to working further with Stanton Williams and Witherford Watson Mann before appointing a chosen firm in February.’

Stanton Williams and Witherford Watson Mann will now develop more detailed proposals in response to the competition brief before presenting to the jury again in January. A winner is expected to be announced in early February.

Dixon Jones completed an overhaul of the West End building in 1999.
