[FIRST LOOK] Squire and Partners has submitted plans for two mixed-use towers at Vauxhall Cross in south London
The traffic island site proposal is for a 31-storey tower and a 41-storey tower set in a landscaped ‘urban forest’.
The scheme features 291 apartments, a 179-bed hotel, a skybar, and new pedestrian subways linking to Vauxhall underground station and nearby Wandsworth road.
A 20m-high timber-framed glazed canopy covers the winter garden-style ‘urban forest’. Mezzanies allow public access to the canopied area, featuring cafes, bars, restaurants and shops.
Michael Squire of Squire and Partners said: ‘The plans for the Vauxhall Island site will radically transform the Vauxhall Cross area, opening up the confusing transport interchange and bringing life to the derelict site.
‘The ground-floor environment will be greatly improved, with trees, cafes and the state-of-the-art glass canopy welcoming visitors and residents alike.’
The application was lodged with Lambeth Council this week. If planning consent is granted construction is expected to start in 2012, with the towers opening in 2015.
The Mayor of London’s Vauxhall Nine Elms Battersea Opportunity Area framework recommends the site as having the development potential for substantial numbers of new jobs and homes.
