Pop-up at the UK Passivhaus Conference compares Part L 2006 and Passivhaus specifications

Two timber clad pods were on display at this year’s Passivhaus Conference. Developed by Church Lukas, Factory Homes, Saint-Gobain and GB Building Solutions, the prefabricated student bedroom pods were designed to show the difference between Part L and Passivhaus requirements.

The pods aimed to show how Passivhaus construction could be achieved using readily available mainstream construction products.

During the conference students stayed in the two pods and their energy consumption was monitored.

The results of this monitoring showed an average energy consumption level of 180kWh/m² for the Part L pod, compared to just 50kWh/m² for the one constructed in accordance with Passivhaus principles. 

The pods will now be moved to the Energy Technologies Building at the University of Nottingham for further monitoring and testing.

Specification of the Passivhaus pod

Windows: triple glazed with a u-value of 0.8
Wall insulation: 300mm
Roof insulation: 550mm
Floor insulation: 250mm
