It will be the nearest thing we have to the Domesday Book - but could end up even more comprehensive. I refer to the work being carried out by NLUD (pronounced 'enludd'), which stands for the National Land Use Database. The first chunk of its systematic survey of land and buildings is about to appear, providing evidence of derelict land and buildings which should make easier the life of those promoting urban regeneration.

NLUD is backed by the Government and Ordnance Survey; it should also help establish whether the targets for housing on previously used urban land bear any relation to reality (current betting: two to one against).
