Snell Associates wins job for Gibraltar theatre refurb

Snell Associates has won a competition to redevelop the Theatre Royal in Gibraltar.The commission is a crucial part of plans by the Rock's government to have Gibraltar listed as a World Heritage site.

The architect is to restore the original theatre, built in 1826 and twice the subject of extensive alterations, and construct contemporary conference facilities to the rear.Work is at an early stage and a budget has yet to be allocated.

'There's a lot of heritage here worth preserving, ' said Robin Snell. 'There is colonial, military architecture plus more decorative Spanish and Moorish buildings.We're anxious to develop an architectural response to this tradition.'
