Smith Scott Mullan Associates has revealed the first images of its vision to regenerate the waterfront at the port city of Stranraer, Scotland
The Edinburgh-based practice was commissioned by Dumfries & Galloway Council to transform Stranraer into a marine leisure destination.
Eugene Mullan, director at the practice, said: ‘The masterplan primarily supports the marine leisure industry encouraging new pontoons; harbour-side houses hotels and leisure facilities.’
Stranraer is one of mainland Britain’s most westerly towns, serving as a major port linking Scotland with Ireland.
The international shipping company Stena Line earlier this year abandoned its service from the port, relocating to a new site further north on Loch Ryan. The local council is now planning to regenerate the city following Stena’s departure.
The project connects the historic town centre to the waterfront, creating a new public domain centred around water activities.
A route is planned following the Town burn stream, connecting the sea with Castle Square where Smith Scott Mullan Associates has produced detailed designs for new public realm.
Beyond the town centre the masterplan spreads out with ‘planned morphology’ of the forms of traditional dockside developments, allowing larger contemporary uses to be accommodated.
A coastal edge promenade is proposed, linking enclosed and open spaces along the waterfront with the proposed marina and water sports facilities.
