Slate cladding steps into the limelight

  • Comment

'Used in an innovative way as part of a large palette of carefully chosen materials' was the judges' verdict on Burlington's Broughton Moor slate in awarding the Stone Federation's Natural Stone Award to London's 25 Gresham Street office building. Used by architect Nicholas Grimshaw & Partners as cladding on the 10-floor building, the flame-textured and hone-edged panels overlap horizontally to reflect the stepped planted terraces. The mid-green colour is picked up by the greentinted anti-sun glass. Inside, the slate is echoed in flooring and vanity tops.
