Shortlisted designs revealed in Olympic south park contest

The Olympic Park Legacy Company has revealed images of the five shortlisted schemes in the contest to design the ‘pivotal’ public space between the aquatics centre and the Olympic stadium

The company launched a competition in July this year for a landscape masterplan for the South Park site which sits ‘within the branches’ of the River Lea and around the 114m-tall ArcelorMittal Orbit sculpture by Anish Kapoor.

Among the architects working on the bids are Niall McLaughlin, Make and Heneghan Peng Architects which has already completed the brightly coloured, 54m-wide bridge at the east London Olympic Park.

According to the competition’s organiser Malcolm Reading Consultants, the post-Games South Park landscape masterplan and hub ‘will be central to the success of the area’ and ‘will evolve over time to become an enticing destination within the future Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.’ The victorious scheme will be built on the park in Stratford after the London 2012 Games finish.

The concepts proposals will be on ‘anonymous’ display at the NLA, Store Street, London from Monday (21 November) until early January.

A winner is expected to be announced next month.
