Shepheard Epstein Hunter wins go-ahead for office-to-school scheme

[First look + plans] Shepheard Epstein Hunter Architects has won planning permission to convert and extend a former housing association headquarters in Lambeth into a new school  

The two-form entry New Norwood School in West Norwood, south London will be partially housed in the revamped Gabriel House, a 1910 Arts and Crafts-style building, and partially in a ‘colourful four-storey extension cut into the sloping site’.

The main block was originally an orphanage for Jewish children and more recently was used as offices for London and Quadrant Housing Association.

The £5 million scheme starts on site next month (July 2011) and is due for completion in September 2012. The school will become part of Julian’s School, an existing primary school further to the east.
