Sharp Willed

Will Alsop is one of Britain's 50 sharpest men, according to this month's Esquire magazine, which proclaims that Alsop's Erotic Art Museum in Hamburg 'isn't half bad'. Alsop is the only architect on the list and even he only makes it to number 33. Nick Serota of the Tate fares rather better, making it to number seven on the basis that 'Bankside couldn't have happened without him'. In a rare instance of a client getting the flak for something which might reasonably have been blamed on the architect, Esquire adds: 'We forgive him for. . . the fact that the untreated oak flooring in the new Tate produced a dust that is uniquely corrosive to paintings. Duh!'
