Shapero reveals Manchester mental health centre

[FIRST LOOK] Maurice Shapero, working with Bolton-based Bradshaw Gass and Hope has unveiled these proposals for a new mental health centre in Great Ancoats Street, Manchester.

The scheme for teenage mental health charity 42nd Street features two interlocking cubes – ‘one respects the contextual geometry, the other is twisted in plan, section and elevation’.

The building will clad in a white reconstructed stone, precast concrete panel with ‘tight, grouted white joints’.

  • respecting contextual geometry?
cant judge this by the image but contextual look or presence doesn't look to be addressed, and as for being a mental health centre, Shapero should really understand that the people using this building will not want to advertise that they are doing so, and likewise the building should be understated and not such an icon on a simple streetscape. I think he's off the mark if he thinks this type of building is to be a statement or a "play of contextual geometries" or perhaps he thinks its a museum of modern art?
