Selfridges in the bag

Future Systems' radical design for a new £40 million Selfridges in Birmingham has been awarded planning permission, despite resistance from local conservationist groups such as the Victorian Society. 'I was always optimistic because the city council was so positive from the start, ' said Future Systems' partner Amanda Levete. 'We got a bit nervous because of some local letters, but right from the outset Birmingham saw it as a real opportunity to do something positive for the city.'
