Marshalling forces towards a common goal where the project is not a building but a public open space is a particular challenge of collaboration, operation and aesthetics. sea has carried out a variety of collaborative urban identity projects for Tottenham Hale in London, and was a finalist in the Crystal Palace and the Battersea Park competitions. A masterplan analysis for a 30ha inner-city site in the centre of Warsaw offered 800,000m2 of floor space.
EMSLIE HORNIMAN PARK, NORTH KENSINGTON, LONDON
This £1.77 million flagship urban regeneration project for the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea followed on a successful competitive interview with North Kensington City Challenge. Involving improvements to Kensal Road, parallel to the Grand Union Canal, the project emphasis was later re-focused on the Emslie Horniman Park, which includes a Grade II-listed Voysey garden and structures. The land for the park was donated by the philanthropist Emslie Horniman of the Horniman tea family and has ever since enjoyed the patronage of the local community. The new masterplan, evolved in close collaboration with the local interest groups, includes sports facilities, a playground and an external auditorium. These proposals secured£1 million grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, £200,000 from the Arts Lottery and £200,000 from the Sports Lottery in addition to the original budget of £400,000. The project is on site and due for completion in July 1998.

SANASINA, GULF OF AQUABA, EGYPT
The £250 million SanaSina project set out to establish a 10ha resort in the Sinai on the Gulf of Aqaba. The design was founded on sustainable, environmentally sound practice comprising three tourist villages: one focused on a new harbour and nautical activities, another on arts, culture and a local market, and the third on sports. A horticulture zone with plant nurseries and a university field station, villages for the complex staff, a clinic, and a residential area fronting on to a small lagoon were also included. Perhaps not surprisingly, these ambitious and altruistic goals proved unachievable. The project did, however, secure substantial funds from the eu and the Friedrich Ebert Foundation to prepare development guidelines for the Egyptian government for practical sustainable tourism development along the eastern seaboard. The experience gained in this project is now being applied to more modest, but equally environmentally challenging, tourism projects in Cuba.

Bridges (23 designs to date ) and engineering aesthetics are becoming a field of strength for sea. In 1993 Cezary Bednarski won the Thames Path bridge competition proposing the world's first carbon fibre bridge protected with a diamond film. Later sea emerged as one of six winners in the worldwide two-stage London Millennium bridge competition with a minimal, unique, appearance-changing bridge, and was highly commended in the 700m Poole Harbour bridge competition. Progetto ArcoBaleno 2000 concept, involving 20 temporary hotel bridges for Rome to house millennial pilgrims, and the Inhabited Garden Bridge Between Christianity and Islam for Rome were exhibited at the Living Bridges Exhibition at the Royal Academy in London. In 1998, with Hadrian's bridge in Carlisle and the Whatmans Field bridges in Maidstone, sea emerged at the forefront of stress ribbon bridge design.
WHATMANS FIELD BRIDGES, MAIDSTONE
sea is a member of a team which secured£4 million Millennium Commission funding for a 10km linear park along the Medway river. Stretching from Teston to Allington Lock, it includes Whatmans Field in Maidstone, locked between a railway line and the Medway river. sea designed two bridges which will link Whatmans Field with the rest of the park. Each bridge is 170m long, the main span 46m. The bridges, 'double-cranked' stressed ribbons echoing the swing of an orchestra conductor's baton, will be unique. It is likely that Maidstone will remain the only place on earth with two such structures.

LANDMARK BRIDGE STUDY, ALBERT DOCK, LIVERPOOL
An initial study for this covered bridge (span 40m) was commissioned by Arrowcroft's Albert Dock Company. An aluminium semi-monocoque sculptural roof structure carries the deck, providing a functional link between the Edward and the Atlantic Pavilions, unlocking the latter's commercial potential. The bridge, with its own acoustic environment, was conceived as an evocative and symbolic new high-profile focal point for the dock, marking the presence of the Tate Gallery. Due to a change of heart at adc, a new parent is being sought for further development of this project.

HADRIAN'S BRIDGE, GATEWAY CITY MILLENNIUM PROJECT, CARLISLE

The world's first 'cranked' stress ribbon bridge, won in an riba competition, will be located on the line of Hadrian's Wall, a World Heritage Site. The original wall and bridges were built in times of compression; the sea bridge reflects the fact that we are now living in times of tension. sea wanted to design a contemporary bridge which would merit Jean-Jacques Rousseau's comment when he first saw the Roman Pont du Garde: 'Simple and noble construction.' A stress ribbon appeared the most appropriate solution for the site, offering both the 'stony' solidity associated with Roman bridges, while being a modern structure using the tensile strength of contemporary materials with economy.
