Building work at UK schools will have to conform to national standards from this month after regulations dating back to the 1940s were revoked by the DETR.

Under the new standards, schools cease to be exempt from building regulations and must be scrutinized by a recognized building control body or approved inspector. Under the old regulations schools could self-certify that construction complied with standards from the Department for Education and Employment - drawing on the expertise of Local Education Authorities. Outsourcing of inhouse building and design work has eroded this knowledge-base.
