[FIRST LOOK] The London-office of Schmidt Hammer Lassen (SHL) has unveiled these designs for a new central library in the Canadian port city of Halifax, Nova Scotia

The £27 million scheme has been drawn up with Canadian practice Fowler Bauld & Mitchell - part of the victorious design team which won the international competition to design the Halifax Central Library in March this year (2010).

Morten Schmidt, founding partner at SHL, said: ‘In the design process we have been particular keen on reflecting the spirit of the local community as well as the ‘genus loci’ of the site making Halifax Central Library unique in many ways.

‘We believe that Halifax Central Library will become a landmark cultural hub for the community.’.

Following further design development the final detail designs will be revealed to the public in March/April 2011.

Construction is expected to start in summer 2011 and the library is due for completion in early 2014.
