Scepticism about Reid as sustainable champion

It is a pleasant surprise to learn that the former director general of the RIBA has become a late convert to the cause of sustainability, as revealed in his election statement (AJ 19.10.00), though some might be excused for a slight scepticism in view of his record.

It was one of his first actions on becoming director general to close the energy office which serviced the institute's work in this field. This was done in the face of unanimous opposition from the practice board, the Southern region and the environment and energy committee. This led to the early retirement of the experienced staff member responsible for work on sustainability and the closure of the Southern regional office. It was on Alex Reid's personal initiative that the environment and energy committee was disbanded in 1998.
