As architectural attention in Chicago focuses on the new student centre at iit (Illinois Institute of Technology) by Pritzker-winner Rem Koolhaas, little is being done about Crown Hall, Mies van der Rohe's 1956 masterpiece. It is sorely in need of some tender loving care. The marble front stair is propped up by wooden planks, the windows are leaking and the steel skin is rusting. An appeal was launched five years ago to raise $5.5 million to fund a restoration programme. Alas, to date the grand sum realised is: $200,000.
