Emerging practice Sasanbell Architects has submitted plans for this 12-storey hotel on the site of the historic Custom House in Clyde Street, Glasgow
The scheme for operators Hilton will convert the empty, Grade A listed Custom House building - formerly used as an office and currently on the Buildings at Risk Register - into the ‘front of house’ linked to the new high-rise bedroom block through a glazed courtyard.
According to the Glasgow-based architects, the tower’s geometric cladding was inspired by Argyle pattern and the lattice structure of the city’s Central Bridge.
The architect’s view
The project has been through the statutory three month public consultation with an open day held at the Custom House last March. The scheme has been presented to Glasgow City Council’s Urban Design Panel twice and has seen representatives from Historic Scotland and Glasgow City Council’s heritage group visit the site with a favourable outcome.
Siting a 12 storey building on a very constrained site has been a challenge for the designers with a gap of only 5m connecting the blocks together. Although it is one of the taller buildings along that stretch, the City planners have always encouraged taller developments along the Clyde Waterfront with previous applications approved for 20 plus storey towers on the Custom House Quay and neighbouring sites.
The notion of having a tall landmark building at the end of Buchanan Street and St. Enoch Square providing an axial focal point for the river from the concert hall has been an ambition of the city for some time. Even though this building is no more than 12 Storeys, (four less than the St. Andrews tower and the cinema behind it), it will be visible from the top of Buchanan Street.
