Sandy Rendel's steel-clad house wins planning

  • Comment

Up-and-coming practice Sandy Rendel Architects has landed planning for this Cor-ten steel-clad house on the site of a derelict workshop in Lewes, East Sussex

Practice founder Sandy Rendel said the steelwork echoed the ‘red clay brickwork and tiles of the area while alluding to the past industrial heritage of the site and adjacent nature reserve.’

Construction work on the riversdie scheme is due to start next year (2013).

The architect’s view

Built off the roughcast concrete river wall it will enjoy expansive views to the south and west over the river and its low-lying flood plain. In stark contrast the chalk face of Cliffe Hill rises steeply to the east to provide an imposing backdrop.
The distorted vernacular form orientates the interior towards the key views and provides sheltered external pockets around the building to buffer the sound of the adjacent road. Its scale is broken down by carving away the ridge and with the addition of two single storey elements on the roadside. These frame an entrance courtyard and reflect the character and grain of the adjoining garages and extensions built right to the pavement line.
The simple palette of materials has been chosen to emphasise the building’s form and reflect the tonal and material qualities of the site and the surrounds. At the ground floor level an insitu concrete frame is in-filled with glass and local ash-glazed brickwork
