Musee d'Orsay architect Gae Aulenti is in hot water in her home country. News that she has been commissioned to restore the first floor of Rome's sixteenth-century Palazzo Quirinale has alarmed the art establishment: 'It is like entrusting the restoration of the Sistine chapel to Matisse, or the basilica of St Peter's to Frank Lloyd Wright,' thunders art historian Alvar Gonzales-Palcios.
