Rory Olcayto is AJ's new editor

Rory Olcayto has been appointed as the AJ’s new editor, taking over from Christine Murray, now editor of The Architectural Review

The appointment follows a 14-month tenure as acting editor while Christine was on maternity leave. Christine has now joined the AJ’s sister title The Architectural Review as editor.

Since joining AJ in 2008, Rory has won the IBP architecture writer of the year twice, the IBP feature writer of the year once, and last year, as acting editor, saw the AJ win IBP’s Weekly magazine of the year trophy.

He said: ‘It’s a great honour to be editor of The Architects’ Journal, a magazine I have been reading since I began my architectural studies in 1989.

‘I’ve done two stints as acting editor, in 2009-10 and for the past 13 months and I’m mindful of my responsibility to AJ’s loyal readers, to the profession and to the heritage of the brand.

‘I’ll do my best to continue the great work done by my predecessor, Christine Murray. I wish her every success as editor of the Architectural Review.’

Before embarking on a career in journalism in 2003, Rory studied architecture at the University of Strathclyde, graduating with a BSc in 1993 and an MSc in 1996. He then went on to work in practice in Glasgow, Liege and Istanbul, and as a designer in the videogames industry.

Rory has been a RIBA Awards judge, has served on the jury of the British Construction Industry Awards since 2009, ran a first-year design studio for two years and is a guest critic at a number of UK and Irish universities.

Will Hurst, who has been acting deputy editor since March 2014, now takes up the role of deputy editor on a permanent basis.

  • Congratulations on the appointment of your new editor. I remember Rory as a tutor from University. He has just the correct air of arrogance to fulfil the role admirably.
